A beacon of innovation and energy in his ownership of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban was born in Pittsburgh in 1958. Cuban, after graduating from Indiana University, sold MicroSolutions for millions, and built incredible business acumen while running it. Cuban's visionary ways played a large role in reinvigorating the franchise when he bought the team. The deal is a major milestone for the Mavericks, who are also in the final stages of transitioning to a new era with Cuban maintaining a minority ownership stake at 27%. 

Cuban's decision to cash out is consistent with his vision of the future of NBA team ownership due to his dealing with the majority stake in the Mavericks. A future where real estate is the catalyst to win will drive these joint ventures, using it as a source of competitive advantage in the sports team success battle. Not only does this show Cuban's business savviness, but it also opens the door to some innovative renovations down the way for the Mavericks.

At $3.5 billion, the sale marks a significant premium to previous valuations of the Mavericks franchise, realizing the tremendous growth and opportunities that have come to fruition under Cuban's stewardship. Forbes appraised the team at $4.5 billion last October, making the Mavericks the No. 7 most valuable NBA franchise. The injection of value this season alone is a testament to the incredible influence Cuban has had since he bought the franchise.

Mark Cuban has had an amazing journey from a tech entrepreneur to an NBA team owner. However, his buying (and then selling) of the Dallas Mavericks is perhaps the best example of how the growth of the league mirrored Cuban's dedication to innovation and success. The Mavericks, under new ownership, keep plugging away, aided in part by the fact Cuban did change the culture and set the foundation on which the team's success is still being measured, a testament to his vision and a lasting remembrance to his place in team history and the NBA itself
